Service Description

Perched high in South Australia’s Eden Valley, Heggies Vineyard has built its reputation on something beautifully simple: one remarkable site and a determination to let that site speak through the wine. Sitting around 550–570 metres above sea level, Heggies is one of Australia’s higher-altitude vineyards. Cool conditions, varied slopes and aspects, and distinctive soils create wines with the freshness, natural acidity and mineral character that have become signatures of the estate. Above all, Heggies is renowned for Riesling and Chardonnay — varieties that thrive in this cool, elevated corner of Eden Valley. And the wines have the silverware to back it up. The 2012 Heggies Riesling won the Trophy for Best Riesling at the National Wine Show of Australia, the 2019 Estate Chardonnay took the Best Chardonnay Trophy at the 2021 Barossa Wine Show, and the 2012 Botrytis Riesling won a Regional Trophy at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Today, Heggies is in the hands of winemaker Marc van Halderen, who took the reins in 2021. Born and trained in South Africa, Marc graduated with honours in Winemaking and Cellar Technology from Elsenburg in Stellenbosch before gaining experience in South Africa, Burgundy and the Loire Valley. He arrived in Australia for the 2013 vintage and joined the Hill-Smith family’s winemaking team before eventually taking charge at Heggies. Marc’s approach is perfectly suited to Heggies: precision, restraint and an obsession with preserving the character of the vineyard. His Chardonnays range from vibrant and finely textured to the complex, age-worthy Reserve Chardonnay, while Riesling remains an essential part of the Heggies story. For Icons of Industry, Marc joins us to explore Heggies Vineyard, the extraordinary Eden Valley site behind the wines, and why this quiet high-country vineyard has earned such an enduring reputation for Australian Riesling and Chardonnay.
