PENFOLDS - Wednesday 2nd December
Penfolds: The house that gave Australia Grange — and changed Australian wine forever.
Service Description
Some wineries make great wine. Penfolds helped define what Australian wine could become. Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, Penfolds has spent more than 180 years pushing Australian wine forward — experimenting, challenging convention and creating wines that would eventually stand among the great wines of the world. And then came Max Schubert. After travelling to Bordeaux, Schubert returned to Australia with an audacious idea: to create an Australian red capable of ageing for decades. In 1951, he made the first experimental vintage of what would become Penfolds Grange. The extraordinary part? When Penfolds management ordered him to stop making it, Schubert continued in secret. History proved him right. Grange went on to become a South Australian heritage icon, one of Australia’s most collected wines and the benchmark against which generations of Australian fine wine have been measured. Across its history, Grange has accumulated more than 35 perfect critic scores and helped establish Australian wine on the international fine-wine stage. But Penfolds is far bigger than a single legendary bottle. Its famous Bin wines, distinctive House Style and generations of winemakers have created one of the most recognisable wine identities Australia has ever produced. Bin 389. Bin 707. St Henri. Yattarna. Grange. These aren’t simply labels. They are names woven into Australian wine history. Our Icons of Industry series was created to celebrate producers that didn’t simply succeed in their field — they changed it. Penfolds doesn’t just qualify. Penfolds practically defines the brief.
